Antivirus warning about the installer?
Some antivirus programs may warn about this file or put it in quarantine. This is a false positive: GameRanger X does things with games that antivirus software is used to treating as suspicious. Download the installer only from gameranger-x.com — then the file is genuine and you can allow it.
Why this happens and what to do
Why an antivirus may mistake GameRanger X for a threat
To let old games see each other over the internet as if they were on a local network, GameRanger X does a few things that antivirus programs check especially closely:
- It creates a virtual network adapter and adds firewall rules for games. This is why it needs administrator rights.
- It loads a small module into the game process. This is how the game learns its virtual address and finds other players. Cheats and malware use the same technique, so antivirus programs react to the technique itself, not to what the program actually does.
- The program is new and not yet digitally signed. Antivirus programs that judge files automatically (with machine learning) are wary of anything new and little-known.
That is why the detections have generic names such as Wacatac!ml, Gen:Heur…, MalwareX-gen. They mean “looks suspicious”, not “a specific virus was found”. Most antivirus programs do not flag the file.
How to make sure the file is genuine
- Download only from gameranger-x.com. We do not publish the installer on other sites, torrents or groups.
- The file link starts with https://gameranger-x.com/updates/ — you can see it in your browser's downloads list.
- If someone sent you the file in a chat or you got it from another site, do not run it.
What to do if your antivirus blocked the file
- Your browser says the file may be dangerous — open the downloads list and choose “Keep”.
- Windows says “Windows protected your PC” — click “More info” → “Run anyway”.
- Microsoft Defender removed the file — open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection history, select the GameRanger X entry and click Actions → Allow on device.
- Another antivirus (Avast, AVG, Bitdefender, etc.) — restore the installer from quarantine and add both the installer file itself and the folder C:\Program Files\GameRanger X to the exclusions, so the antivirus leaves both the setup and the program alone.
